A while back on a beach in Zanzibar, Soji found a perfect urchin shell.

It had a hole on one side. I thought it would make a good luminaire.

The hole makes a perfect cable entry.

I like how it glows like a lantern.  I like the warmth it emits and how use of artificial light can invert the intricate details and natural order of the shadows.

Thanks to Dave and Craig at Mike Stoane Lighting for the parts.

  3. WOOOOOOW is that what an Urchin's shell looks like? At first I thought it was a strange hat?!? Lovely idea, I'd use it as my night light :)

  4. Now I'm intrigued as to the size of your shell - the ones I've found in the past have sat, nestled in my palm very easily. So, I'm imagining yours as being the size of a large fairy light, but perhaps it's much bigger?? Whatever the size it's a perfect way to illuminate such a delicate structure. Inspired idea...

  7. My dad used to make these for use when I was little. Late 1970's/early80's. I had one on my bedside table. Just like this. This is so very nostalgic. Thank you.
