Since the hyper-trendy-bonkersness landed it's gentrification-mobile in Dalston many, many cafés have sprouted up all over the endz recently. Quibbling aside, it is nice to have more of a choice these days and among the newbies The Bird that perches on the corner of Bradbury Street and Boleyn Road is a true favourite, so don't be fooled by my grumpful face (it's always like that).
Here you can get a fresh, clear and invigorating mint tea and apparently excellent coffee (I wouldn't know as I don't drink the stuff). I highly recommend their Ginger Zinga as it has enough oomph to blast away lurking winter chills.
The Bird Café also offer a selection of smashing sandwiches. I love love love their roast vegetable, halloumi salad Ararat wraps. They are very tasty indeed and they feel healthy and not too heavy on the belly.
If you've had a bit of a booze-filled night-before, or you're just famished, then The Bird's My Mums Breakfast Bread (at least I think that is what it is called) will knock you back into shape in no time. It is a sort of baked concoction that includes cheese, bread and ham (there is also a vegetarian alternative). It is well seasoned, generous and delicious with the chutney on the side.
All in all, I find the Bird to be a relaxed reasonably priced place with friendly kind staff. On our recent visit, they even made an off menu wrap for our friend who was delighted with it!
I would happily drag any of my friends along to The Bird. I keep returning and it has not let me down yet.
