Eye Spy Nicoletta Ceccoli

I came across Nicoletta's work whilst browsing books in the children's book section. I often do this for I have a penchant for illustrators and such is a place alive with their work.

I was immediately drawn to her style that seems to blend surrealism, magic, and dark whimsy so deliciously well.

Nicoletta was born in San Marino, Italy and her inspirations include many of my favourite illustrators including, Mark Ryden, Ed Gorey, Domenico Gnoli amongst others.

I will leave you with some of my favourite images from her book Beautiful Nightmares:

  1. Clearly very skilled, but she appears to have more or less copied Ryden's style bit for bit. Desaturated palette, surreal characters, pretty girls with huge heads. However, I suppose copying is the highest form of compliment.

  3. It does remind me a lot of Mark Ryden's work. When I glanced at the first picture, I thought it was by him.

I like the second one a lot.

  8. I also thought this was a direct copy of Ryden and had to look carefully for the signature. Very talented, but he did it first, though his art can be a bit more lurid. I'd still love to have a Ryden original in my house.
