Marvellous Mint

The Japanese have an oddly accurate way of describing that menthol/minty fresh cooling sensation that one gets after using a product with such ingredients......"Suu Suu"

There are countless such onomatopoeic expressions in colloquial Japanese and this is one of my personal favourites. Now that I have broached the subject, I shall endeavour to drop a few of these expressions 'pon the blog here and there.

ANYHOO!! I wanted to chitter chatter about these so fresh, so fresh, so clean, minty marvels that I simply adore. My penchant for all things minty, menthol and eucalyptus was born out of my experience in the arid dry heat of Africa and sodden humidity of Japan. I sought an invigorating sharp freshness after showering and ended up addicted to the TINGLE! Here are some of my faves new and old:

Malin + Goetz Peppermint Shampoo ♥

Great stuff for the summer holidays + all hair types. The peppermint kick leaves a tingling feeling on the scalp which I love especially when I am in places of sticky humidity or the dusty dry heat of Africa. This is also great for kick starting the day. Showering with this in the morning is a great big WAKEY WAKEY. Despite it's oomph this is kind to your scalp and hair.

Available in the UK from Zuneta or Liberty

Shiseido AG+ Mint Leaf Deodorant ♥

The cream stick formula is a winner for me. I like the way that it moisturises the pits and the medicated mint fragrance is light with a slight cooling effect only active if you stick your arms out in a "Y" shape in the breeze. It contains silver ions that are known for their natural anti bacterial properties. This is a really effective deodorant as is my personal favourite when I can get hold of it.

Available in the UK from Adam Beauty HK (ships to UK for $2)

Hakugen Mint Leaf Blotting Film ♥

I have a T-zone of oil slick proportions. Unfortunately this is accompanied with Sahara like cheeks so using an oil preventing foundation is no solution at all. Instead, I rely on blotting film (not paper). This mint scented offering from Hakugen is great for freshening up without interfering with my war paint.

Shiseido AG+ Cool Type Large Shower Sheets ♥

I have mentioned these previously on my blog but just to reiterate their brilliance; I bought these in Tokyo and was lured in by the friendly looking granny on the packaging. These are a god sent in the relentlessly sticky Japanese summer and are a much more practical solution to taking a shower every hour! They banish that "I feel minging" feeling with a cool blast of menthol zingy-ness.

Rohto Cool 40a Eye Drops ♥

I shall let you in on a secret. I keep one of these by the bed for difficult morns when waking up is a troublesome demand. A couple of drops of this and my eyes are wide awake! You may shriek at the very idea of menthol in your eye drops but honestly these are very refreshing and awakening.

Kitsune Maison Mint Candle ♥

So this is a bit of a cheat as it is not a toiletry item but it is the bee's knees of my recent candle discoveries. Kitsune Maison is a very cool French (with big dose of Landan and Japanese influence) collective famed for their fashion label, electronic record label and now.....candles. This is a very earthy mint scent. Rather masculine and as sexy as mint gets! I am really looking forward to trying their Moss candle too.

Available in the UK from Present Mens Clothing in Shoreditch

Malin + Goetz Eucalyptus Deodorant ♥

This is a compulsory unisex item for any couple's bathroom in my opinion. The fresh fragrance is invigorating. It doesn't stain your clothes and it does not irritate the skin. It is also much more widely available that the Shiseido deodorant mentioned above.

Available in the UK from Zuneta or Liberty

EOS Sweet Mint Lip Balm ♥

The lovely Tammy from NotaRichGirl got me on this stuff and I really like it. I am not madly glad about it's spherical appearance not it's rubberised packaging but actual balm is full of minty fresh goodness. These are 95% organic, 100% natural and free of all nasties.

Available on Zuneta

I hope that you have enjoyed my romp through all things minty and menthol. With summer just around the corner these are well worth trying out if you can....great for sharing with your other half too because these are all unisex!

  1. I love onomatopoeic words - like the word umami - it sounds like slapping your lips together. Also a fan of minty deodorants and shampoos - I like the Philip B Peppermint and Avocado one, I shall have to give the M&G a sniff!

  2. Thank you for sharing with us all these cooling sensations. I would so love to get my hands on the mentholated deodorant and the shower sheets. Sounds like a very good saviour in our hot and humid weather. How does the shower sheets work? Is it like a wet wipe?

Oh and the menthol eyedrops! The first time I used my friend’s who told me it’s a really wonderful feeling, I nearly screamed my eyes out. It felt like medicated oil in my eyes and I teared like nobody’s business. After that it felt kinda refreshing.

  9. the minty deodorant sounds fab - I need to get my hands on that before summer hits! I keep a bottle of rohto drops near on my nightstand as well - they definitely wake me up and help alleviate the dry eyes that I'm prone to!

  12. I have such mixed feelings with minty-freshness... I love how it smells and tastes and feels, but unfortunately products that contain it usually dry out my skin (especially facial cleansers) and wreak absolute havoc on my lips (;_;). I haven't tried the Eos balms yet since I've heard that they're not that moisturizing (for me, that means dehydrating as my lips just seem to be "special") but sweet mint sounds so delightful! I also really want the candle and the shower sheets hehe.

  14. @grace London, I also LOVE Philip B's avocado and peppermint shampoo, love the tingly feeling it gives your scalp, makes you feel extra clean.

MUST try the mint leaf blotting paper and (also love this brand) EOS lip balm in mint.

    Thanks for this post.
