...a whole lot of things that I will always remember.
Take the following for instance:
Whilst encouraging me to improve my grammar and general vocabulary she would spin off the following;
"if you cannot say what you mean, you cannot mean what you say".
She had a thing about manners and would scold me bitterly if I ever forgot those two simple words, "please" and "thank you".
When I would complain about being bored she would declare that;
"only boring people get bored". Hence I was seldom bored I ALWAYS found something to do.
I actually cite my mother on a daily basis especially...is that a strange thing to do?
I used to believe that my mum must have been a griot in a former life (if such a thing is possible). She had this incredible story telling technique! Never once did she refer to a book. She would ask us for a word and spin off a narrative of mythical proportions.
I like to think that I have a vivid imagination. I create entire worlds in my head. I lead myself to believe a host of highly improbable things and to be honest this can also be my biggest downfall. Either way, I think this dream soup that sloshes around in my head started way back then with my mum.
My mother said a lot of things but it is her life lessons that have stuck harder to my head and heart. I have learned so much from watching her mistakes. My own personal errors are countless, yet the memory of my mum's have saved me in inconcievable ways.My mum was the most interesting woman I have seen. Naturally I am biased but she really was. She had alluring blue grey eyes and afro hair that went blonde ish when she spent time in the sun. She had the longest legs ever and the most perfect smile.
I thought long and hard about sharing this with my readers. Yes, this is a personal subject to share. However, I thought to myself that EVERYONE has or has had a mother at some point. It's nothing so rare after all.
I don't have many photos left of her. Just a small handful that I decided to scan just in case. She really was a phenomenal woman. I just wish I got to know her a bit better.
Incidentally! I love old photos. PROPER photos, the type that you snapped in HOPE that they will have captured the moment. In HOPE that they would turn out ok. Yet, even though they were almost never perfect...they had character, they held ambience.
I need to get me a Holga or Diana..............Add that to my wish list.
Have a wonderful weekend and buy your mums a cake or something.....you don't need mothers day to remind you.
X

Now we know where you get your sweet personality, long legs, elegant cheekbones and creativity!
ReplyDeleteyour mum sounds great. and wow her body is amazing. =) what a lovely dedicated post.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the less than perfect pictures, thats why i love taking candid shots, pictures of people when they are unaware but still charmingly beautiful. =)
your mum was really beautiful and I'm sure she looks down on you til this day :) thanks for sharing, I think it makes me appreciate our mothers even more!

ReplyDeleteYour mom seems like a amazing woman and you are a wonderful daughter to cherish the time you spent with her so much. I realized how much I take my mom for granted and that I should really treasure the moments I'm with her...
ReplyDeleteWow, loved this and LOVE the old vintagey photo. The tea-stained edges make it somehow more real and frozen in history. Really enchanting!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this part of your life with us. Your mother sounded like a truly wonderous person~
ReplyDeleteI love old photos too. There's something joyous about opening a pack of developed photos and finding some that you don't remember taking, that you don't remember seeing anyone take, but capture the moment brilliantly.
This is so lovely :) My mom is such a huge part of my life (I think I mention her daily, somehow, in a conversation with another person). I love old pictures, though my parents were not prone to as many 'candids'. I scanned all the ones we could find as part of a 60th birthday present, and now I'm happy we have them as some of them are starting to fray at the edges.
ReplyDeleteYour mother is beautiful! Mother's Day isn't until May here but I am working on a present :)

I love this post!! You have brought tears to my eyes...your mother was a truly beautiful person just like you!!
ReplyDeletesweetie, I just looked at some of your posts today and found your homage to your mother. I understand your loss and recognize your confort in the pictures of your mum.
ReplyDeleteMy mum would celebrated her 59 birthday today. She looked like the typical blonde woman, but was such a fantastic and stubborn character...So, keep the beautiful memory of your mum and she looks so fabulous in the pictures...such a lively spirit...make your mum proud in staying fab as you are, old cow!
just looking at those photos, I can tell that your mom must've had a huge personality - one that's never really captured on film just right, because she was so much more in person :) now we know where you get your creativity (and endless legs!) from :)
ReplyDeletei think i want a Diana merely for the name, haha...i'm biased - it's a good name!
thank you for sharing this with us.
This is such a beautiful post, your mother looks like a fabulous, fun woman. Thanks so much for sharing x
ReplyDeleteOf all the blogs I read, this post in particular is regularly in my thoughts. I don't know if it's the nostalgic photographs, the genuine emotion, how finely it's written, or all of the above. It's one of my favorites. :)
